Description

A detailed restoration of this FM-2 version of the F4F was commissioned at a private location in the UK with a highly skilled team of engineers and is nearing completion for return to flight. The fuselage and wings are currently in jigs, components and instruments shelved. The overall condition for an aircraft that was submerged for so many years in fresh water is excellent. The fact that such a high proprtion of the original aircraft can be used in the return to flight makes this a unique and historic Wildcat. Original and serviceable parts include an overhauled oil tank, retraction gearbox, overhauled fight instruments,(original ailerons, rudder, elevators ), aft of cockpit large spine fairing, NEW radio mast, set of wheels and brakes, control column, new instrument panel, cockpit glass, kidney glass and side frames, canopy, gun charging handles, oxygen tank mountings, original radio box, rudder pedals overhauled, parts of tailhook retraction assembly, cockpit gearbox for crank, set of lower stub axles and gear legs serviceable, engine mount fireshield -serviceable, carb airbox, oil cooler flutes, ammo boxes, pitot mast.

Additional Features

This aircraft is registered as G-WCMO, and has been registered this way since July of 2020. The Time Capsule Wildcat was assigned to a carrier training squadron in Lake Michigan in June of 1944. Landing accident on the 19th of December 1944 after only 6 months of services. After missing all of the wires on the USS Wolverine, this aircraft dropped off the bow hitting the water and sinking to over 250 feet. After spending 48 years underwater, it was raised in December 1993. It originally was sent to NAS Pensacola and spent a few years until it was traded out with a full release from the Navy. It was listed for sale in 2010 and sold to Wild Warbirds in south Texas and acquired by UK buyer for restoration.
